Pierre Bourdieu (Pierre-Félix Bourdieu), född 1 augusti 1930 i Denguin i Pyrénées-Atlantiques, död 23 januari 2002 [1] i Paris, var en fransk sociolog, kulturantropolog, medieteoretiker och -forskare samt författare.

Much like Giddens’ structuration theory, Bourdieu’s theory of practice represents generative structuralism (Bourdieu and Wacquant 1992). However, Bourdieu introduces the notion of “field” to illustrate that actors and communities have something at stake in devising and executing their practices.

In order to fully understand the comparisons and contrasting issues between Bourdieu and Giddens, it is important to look at each theorists work separately, and then to discuss the issues which arise. 2010-11-01 Bourdieu's work attempts to reconcile structure and agency, as external structures are internalized into the habitus while the actions of the agent externalize interactions between actors into the social relationships in the field. Bourdieu's theory, therefore, is a dialectic between "externalizing the internal", and "internalizing the external". Giddens insists that social life is not confined to individual actions alone and yet, it is not determined by social forces as Bourdieu suggested in his theory of practices (Giddens, 1976, p.95). Social life in Giddens' view, can not be restricted to the view at the micro level, yet, it can not be studied through the macro level alone.
